The chip for contactless MIFARE DESFire EV1 microcontrollers was selected for means of automatic collection of a fare (AFC) from the system of public transport of Madrid. The system of public transport of Madrid which is managed by Regional transport consortium of Madrid (Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid, CRTM) includes the city subway, bus network and network of the suburban railroads, and is serviced by more than 50 different private companies – operators. Residents of Madrid annually make over 1.8 billion trips in this network, and transition to the contactless system of automatic collection of a fare will allow consortium to increase service quality of passengers.
The technology of contactless chips of NXP company based on MIFARE DESFire EV1 technology will be used for sale of all commutation tickets, including preferential travel cards for youth and pensioners. The MIFARE DESFire technology is the open architecture for complete solutions providing the flexibility and protection necessary for creation of the modern systems of collection of a fare. This platform proved the reliability in many cities worldwide, including London, Delhi and Nanjing. It is important that this platform allows to add imperceptibly the innovation multifunction services, such as convergent bank cards, by emulation of the solution MIFARE DESFire EV1 in payment cards or mobile phones with support technologists of NFC. In an open architecture of MIFARE these services are implemented by wide range of products of support from partners of NXP licensing this technology.
"Capability of MIFARE DESFire technology to integrate the systems of protection based on mechanisms of enciphering 3DES and AES and its evolution in more modern products (such as MIFARE DESFire EV1), in addition, became the reasons of the choice by Regional transport consortium of Madrid of this technology for our system of collection of a fare", – Antonio Rubio Fernández, the head of department of technology innovations of Regional transport consortium of Madrid noted.
The new Madrid system of contactless collection of a fare services over 5.2 million residents and also his guests. It gives several advantages both for passengers, and for Regional transport consortium of Madrid. "It is a huge step forward for NXP company. Madrid is the third largest city on the continent therefore this project is confirmation of reliability and efficiency of our products, – Henri Ardevol, the vice president and the CEO of the direction of safe transactions of NXP Semiconductors company says. – Because of the scale of the Madrid system of public transport the Regional transport consortium of Madrid wanted to implement in the city the most reliable and scalable solution for contactless automatic collection of a fare. Our solution passed very tough service tests to confirm its full compliance to requirements of consortium, having proved thereby the functionality and high reliability".
