2024: Development of methods for producing liquid biofuels

Researchers at Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University (BFU) have developed new methods for producing liquid biofuels (biofuels) by hydrothermal conversion of macroalgae biomass and aquatic macrophytes. The results of the study offer prospects for the production of environmentally friendly biofuels from renewable sources. The university announced this on July 25, 2024.

In the context of depletion of natural resources and minerals, as well as the aggravation of global environmental problems associated with greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable technological development requires rational resource management and waste reduction. A team of scientists from BFU, led by the head of the laboratory of microbiology and biotechnology Stanislav Sukhikh, investigated the thermophysical properties and calorific value of biomass of aquatic plants such as Phragmites australis, Scirpus lacustris, Typha angustifolia L. and Sparganium erectum L., and also determined the optimal parameters of hydrothermal conversion of their biomass.

Our study showed that the biomass of P. australis or common reed has optimal thermophysical properties, having an ash content of 7.6% and excellent thermophysical properties, "said Stanislav Sukhikh. - This means that cane can become a valuable raw material for the production of biofuels.

During the study, scientists established the production modes of liquid biofuels (biofuels) and assessed the properties of fuel obtained from cane biomass, including the content of low-boiling fractions and coke residue. It has been found that the amount of fuel yield from cane biomass correlates with the quality of bioneft.

Obtaining biofuels from aquatic plants is one of the promising areas for processing plant biomass, "said Stanislav Sukhikh. - This could be an important step towards sustainable economic development and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. In addition, the use of aquatic plants as raw materials for biofuels will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect the environment.
