2024: Recall of millions of cars with defective airbags

On July 31, 2024, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that more than 50 million cars of different brands can be equipped with defective airbags, which in the event of a traffic accident can cause serious harm to the health of the driver and passengers or even provoke their death. Defective products were marketed by ARC Automotive and Delphi Automotive Systems.

The problem is related to cartridges - one of the key components of airbags. It is the cartridges that allow the cloth dome to inflate in a split second during an accident. However, in the case of ARC Automotive and Delphi Automotive Systems products, the gas generator may be damaged due to increased pressure or insufficient reliable design. As a result, when the pillow is triggered, the elements of the product as shrapnel scatter across the interior of the vehicle, causing injury to people inside.

According to NHTSA, from 2009 to 2023, defective airbags caused at least seven injuries and two deaths USA in and, To Canada as well as at least one death in other regions. Defective pillows were equipped with cars,,, General Motors,, Stellantis Mercedes-Benz Porsche Jaguar Land Rover Maserati,, and Kia other Hyundai brands.

In total, according to the resource Carscoops, about 51 million cars may fall under the recall. At the same time, automakers do not support the revocable program, stating that the low probability of incorrect operation of pillows does not justify such large-scale actions. For carmakers, replacing so many potentially problematic products will result in huge costs.^[1]
