2024: Project Launch

On August 12, 2024, the nonprofit Linux Foundation announced the Open Model Initiative (OMI) project. It aims to promote the creation and implementation of high-quality models artificial intelligence with an open license.

It is said that the OMI initiative was launched in response to decisions by the creators of popular open source models to change the terms of their licensing. The changes in Stability AI with respect to the popular Stable Diffusion 3 (SD3) image generation model are mentioned. Previously, this model was completely free and open, but the changes introduced the structure of the monthly fee and imposed restrictions on its use.

Linux Foundation Launches Free Open AI Model Project

The OMI project is designed to eliminate all obstacles in the implementation of AI models. Attention will focus on developing and training solutions with "irrevocable open licenses without removal provisions or recurring access costs." The initiative involves Invoke, CivitAI and Comfy Org, with community members such as Wand and Sentient Foundation providing support. In general, OMI is an official structure based on the Linux Foundation.

The main purpose of OMI is to promote the development of generative AI models that are "truly open, functional and ethical." To do this, it is planned to create a management structure and working groups focused on joint community development.
