2024: Tripling of the number of electric vehicles in Kazakhstan - up to 10.3 thousand cars

By June 1, 2024, the number of electric vehicles in Kazakhstan almost tripled compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 10.3 thousand units. This increase came amid an overall 12.3% increase in the number of vehicles in the country.

According to the analytical portal energyprom.kz, the total number of registered vehicles in Kazakhstan has reached 5.5 million units. Of these, 4.8 million are cars, which is 12.6% more than in 2022. The number of trucks increased by 9.8%, reaching 540.8 thousand, and the number of buses increased by 13.3%, amounting to 114.1 thousand units.

Almaty became the leader in the number of registered vehicles with 635.6 thousand units, which is 11.7% more than in 2023. It is followed by Almaty region (592.8 thousand), Astana (399.2 thousand), Karaganda (352.1 thousand) and East Kazakhstan (332.9 thousand) regions.

The largest share in the country's fleet is occupied by cars with an engine capacity of 1,500 to 2,000 cubic meters. cm - 39.1% or 2.1 million units. By types of fuel used, gasoline cars prevail, accounting for 81.9% of the total.

Despite the increase in the number of new cars, a significant part of Kazakhstan's fleet is still made up of old vehicles. The number of cars over 20 has reached 2.5 million units, an increase of 4.9% over the year. The number of cars between the ages of 10 and 20 increased by 17.9%, reaching 1.3 million units.

The provision of cars in personal ownership in Kazakhstan as of July 1, 2024 amounted to 22.8 cars per 100 people, which is significantly higher than in 2023 (18.4 cars). The leader in security was the East Kazakhstan region with 39.1 cars per 100 inhabitants.[1]
