2024: Plant Construction

In August 2024, it became known about the construction of a locomotive production plant in the city of Atbasar, Akmola region of Kazakhstan. The project worth ₸47 billion is being implemented by the private company Kamkor Lokomotiv, owned by Russian investors.

According to kursiv.media, the founder of Kamkor Lokomotiv is the Kazakhstan Transport Technologies company, which, in turn, belongs to the Russian firms Vector of Technological Solutions and Discus. The first was registered in Moscow under the leadership of Alexei Lebedev, the second - in Novosibirsk under the leadership of Alexei Dzhulai.

According to the plans, a feasibility study for the project will be developed in 2024. The land plot for construction has already been determined. Construction work is scheduled to begin in 2025, with the first locomotive expected to be produced in late 2026.

The design capacity of the new enterprise will be 360 locomotive sections per year. At the stages of construction and operation of the plant, it is planned to create 800 workplaces. Director of Kamkor Lokomotiv Altai Zhumataev noted that the plant will assemble locomotives with diesel and electric traction, and also provide for the transition to environmentally friendly traction using liquefied gas.

The choice of Atbasar as a construction site is due to its favorable logistical location at the intersection of the republican highway and proximity to the center of the country. The plant will be built on the territory of the existing railway station.

There are two locomotive production enterprises in Kazakhstan - Electric Locomotive құrastyru Zahuyty and Lokomotiv құrastyru Zahuyty. Their total production capacity is 100 pieces of equipment per year. Lokomotiv құrastyru Zayaty is fully owned by the American company Wabtec, and Electric Locomotive құrastyru Zayaty is owned by the Dutch ALSTOM Netherlands B.V.^[1]
