2024: Product Release

In early August 2024, Pentax Medical released the world's first GI endoscope compatible with the Sterrad 100NX sterilizer for plasma treatment of hydrogen peroxide. The product was named ED34-i10T2s.

Pentax Medical introduced the endoscope as a flagship product developed in conjunction with Advanced Sterilization Products (ASP). Together, these companies aim to address the problems of sterilizing duodenoscopes after use, hoping to reduce the risk of cross-infection. The new type of treatment, the developers hope, will increase the availability of sterilized endoscopes and reduce the environmental impact of traditional sterilization plants.

World's first GI endoscope with hydrogen peroxide plasma sterilization launched

According to a press release, ED34-i10T2s is the world's first gastrointestinal endoscope compatible with hydrogen peroxide plasma sterilization. The technology has already revolutionized infection prevention in a number of medical specialties, Pentax says.

The release of the disposable cap endoscope was the company's response to regulatory calls to improve the design of the duodenoscope to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. DEC allows doctors to safely dispose of a disposable duodenoscope cap that may be contaminated with gut bacteria after patient examinations, as well as sterilize reusable components. At the same time, the endoscope retains image quality, performance and ease of use.

When a duodenoscope is used, there is always a low but consistently present contamination risk that has long required the development of a reliable sterilization method. In partnership, Pentax Medical and ASP have developed a technique that takes into account both aspects of the workflow and compliance with sterilization standards, "said Dr. Klaus Mergener, head of the company for medical and scientific affairs and chief physician of Pentax Medical.[1]
