Rosselkhozbank has introduced a universal platform for managing metadata of the Russian vendor Data Sapience

2024: Move to Data Ocean Governance Enterprise Metadata Management platform

Rosselkhozbank, with the support of IT partner GlowByte, transferred the functionality of the metadata management system from Alteryx Connect to the Data Ocean Governance Enterprise Metadata Management (DOG.EMM) platform of the Russian vendor Data Sapience. GlowByte announced this on August 28, 2024. This solution automates data management processes and provides users with the ability to get a picture of data 360.

DOG.EMM is a universal metadata management platform that combines the functionality of a data catalog and a business glossary. The distinctive capabilities of the tool are high flexibility in terms of the supported types of metadata and their structure, their life cycles (coordination processes) and integrations, as well as support for two paintings of the world - current and target (planned changes). This allows you to build a solution both according to the "classic" scenario ("bottom up," from technical metadata and description of flows to business metadata - terms, domains, description of external data, etc.), and "top down," when changes are designed and described in the metadata management system and published after their implementation in systems. 

As part of the project, about 80 types of various metadata objects were migrated and configured in the RSHB, and thousands of objects describing the company's information assets were transferred with the status preserved. In addition, without losing functionality, several dozen coordination processes were migrated that automate the processes of the analytical circuit, and an ambitious task was implemented to prepare for piloting the automated change management process.

Having studied the IT market offers for import substitution of the existing business glossary, my colleagues and I realized that there is no suitable ready-made solution that meets our requirements, and turned to partners - GlowByte and Adastra. Thanks to joint painstaking work, it was possible not only to get a product that ensured the migration of existing data and processes to a new platform without losing functionality, but also provided greater opportunities in the process of managing metadata. In my opinion, the business glossary is the heart of data management, so its performance directly affects data management processes. Together with a wide range of functionality, I want to note the excellent system interface, which is characterized by ease of use and at the same time allows users to intuitively solve problems within the framework of data management processes without additional training on working in the new system, said Alexander Saburov, Director of the Big Data Department of Rosselkhozbank.

The key challenges of the project were the need to ensure the transition to a new solution not only with the preservation of existing functionality and migration of metadata with minimal interruption of processes, but also with guaranteed automation of the processes for managing business initiatives, requirements and assessment during the process. The flexibility and features of the DOG.EMM platform made it possible to transfer the functionality previously implemented in the Western vendor's solution without loss, including complex coordination processes, draft and public versions of data descriptions, as well as continue to integrate metadata management with change management processes - requests for creating or changing reports, requests for loading into the external data bank outline, etc. We are confident that the solution will be a solid foundation for further improvements and to automate and develop metadata management processes in line with the bank's strategies, including further integration of these processes with change management processes, noted Kirill Evdokimov, Head of Data Governance GlowByte.
