2024: Russian schools began to supply devices with a neural network to check the vision of students

In Russian schools, a large-scale program begins to introduce devices with a neural network to check the vision of students. This became known in August 2024. New equipment developed on the basis of the software and hardware complex "Okulist Igor," will begin to enter educational institutions from the beginning of the new academic year. This initiative is aimed at automating the process of screening the vision of schoolchildren and ensuring timely prevention of visual impairment among children.

According to the National Center for the Development of Artificial Intelligence under the Government of the Russian Federation, the project is being implemented in partnership with the Novosibirsk branch of the FGAU NMIC "MNTK" Eye Microsurgery "named after Academician S. N. Fedorov." As part of this cooperation, several schools in Novosibirsk will conduct pilot testing of a new technology that is based on the use of artificial intelligence for vision diagnostics.

According to university representatives, Okulist Igor is an innovative solution that can significantly simplify and speed up the process of mass vision screening among schoolchildren. This complex includes an interactive computer program and hardware that allow remote diagnostics. The use of a neural network allows you to accurately determine the distance to the patient, which significantly increases the accuracy of the results.

Director of the Novosibirsk branch of MNTK "Eye Microsurgery" Valery Chernykh noted that the new development has already attracted the attention of the Russian Ministry of Health. According to him, the use of "Igor Okulist" can become the basis for creating a national system for monitoring the vision of schoolchildren, which will allow identifying risk groups in the early stages and providing timely preventive assistance.

During the pilot project, it is planned to test the capabilities of the system in real conditions of school medical offices. It is expected that the results will be evaluated jointly with the ministries of education and health of the Novosibirsk region, after which the project can be expanded to other educational institutions in the region.[1]
