2024: Road construction begins

In September 2024, work began on the construction of a new highway that will connect Rostov-on-Don with the Crimean city of Dzhanka. The implementation of the project is estimated at between ₽350 and ₽400 billion. This large-scale infrastructure project is aimed at improving the transport accessibility of Crimea and new regions of Russia.

According to Overclockers, the road will pass through the territories that were annexed to Russia in the fall of 2023, and will become an important element of transport infrastructure that provides stable communication between the mainland of Russia and Crimea. The length of the new route will be about 600 kilometers. Design and survey work has already begun, and construction is planned to be completed by 2028.

Acting Governor of the Kherson Region Vladimir Balance noted that the new road will not be a continuation of the Tavrida highway, but will be connected to it by an additional branch. The highway will pass through several key cities, including Taganrog, Melitopol and Mariupol, which will significantly reduce travel time and improve the transport accessibility of the region. Balance also stressed that the road will be built to the highest quality standards, ensuring comfort and safety of movement.

According to the project, the route will include four lanes, which will significantly increase capacity and reduce the load on existing infrastructure, including the Crimean bridge. It is planned that more than 30 thousand cars will be able to pass through the new road every day, which will unload traffic heading to the peninsula.

The construction of the Rostov-Dzhankoy road is part of a large-scale plan to modernize road infrastructure in new Russian regions. This highway will contribute to the development of the region's economy, increase trade and increase the tourist flow to Crimea. Additional improvements to the road network are also envisaged for other areas, including Luganskaya, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhya.[1][2][3][4]
