2024:V China, operations to increase growth for $85 thousand are gaining popularity. They lead to disability

In China, operations to increase growth by lengthening the legs are increasingly popular. However, as stated in the materials released at the end of August 2024, such procedures often lead to the disability of patients.

The essence of the operation boils down to the use of the modernized Ilizarov apparatus. The procedure is based on the property of tissues to respond by growth and regeneration to tension. If the limb is gradually stretched, then the muscles, vessels, nerves and skin will gradually stretch. In order to stretch the bone, it must be crossed. After that, with gradual stretching, the distance between bone fragments increases, and the gap is filled with newly formed bone tissue (regenerate).

Operations to increase growth for 85 thousand dollars are popular in China, but they lead to disability

Under a 2006 PRC Ministry of Health regulation, limb elongation surgery can only be applied to people with congenital deformities or to patients whose bones are of varying lengths due to injury, tumor, or infection. This requirement is associated with a high risk of complications during the procedure. Still, the Chinese, unhappy with their growth, are looking for ways to conduct the operation around the bans. So, a woman from the eastern province of Jiangsu spent $84 thousand on a trip abroad for a procedure that, as she hoped, would make it 13 cm higher. Instead, the patient received a bone infection: she cannot run and even walk quickly, she finds it difficult to breathe.

And a 29-year-old man from Henan province in central China, dissatisfied with his height of 164 cm, spent $14 thousand on a similar operation. According to him, after the procedure, he received legs of different lengths.[1]
