2024: EV recall due to defective software
In late September 2024, the automaker BYD filed for the recall of nearly 100,000 vehicles due to a manufacturing defect. The reason for the recall was the danger of spontaneous combustion of cars.
The automaker will recall 96,714 Dolphin and Yuan Plus electric cars, according to China's State Market Regulatory Authority. These are among the most popular BYD cars actively exported to foreign markets. BYD has already filed a recall plan with the Center for Recall of Defective Products and said that two operating divisions of the company will solve the problem.
The reason of self-ignition call intra production defects of the controller of the electroamplifier of a steering column. When the tool cover is closed, it interferes with the operation of the capacitors located on the controller board and causes a microcrack. These cracks can expand during vehicle use, resulting in short circuits, overheating and potential ignition.
BYD dealers must install insulating gaskets on controllers free of charge to address these safety threats. The owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by registered mail, through the WeChat social network and by phone. BYD also set up a hotline to serve customers affected by the issue.
This recall is known to be the largest in BYD's history. Earlier in April 2024, the company had to recall 16,666 Seagull electric vehicles to fix software bugs and reduce the likelihood of accidents. The regulator said some of the affected cars had problems with the camera driver's software, which could cause the rearview display to fail, narrowing the driver's field of view and increasing the risk of a collision.[1]
