2024: Sentence - suspended sentence for research fraud
Former rector of Omsk State Technical University (OmSTU) Dmitry Mayevsky on October 4, 2024 was sentenced to four years in prison conditionally and a fine of ₽500 thousand for fraud with research work. The court found him guilty of receiving illegal payments for the study, which was downloaded from the Internet.
According to TASS, the joint press service of the Omsk courts reported that Mayevsky was also assigned a probationary period of three years. Together with the ex-rector, his former colleagues were convicted: Vladislav Rachek and Alexandra Kozulina received three years of suspended imprisonment and fines of ₽400 thousand each.
According to investigators, in 2017, Mayevsky, who was then the first vice-rector of OmSTU, entered into a conspiracy with the then rector Anatoly Kosykh and two other university employees. They used the research work of the St. Petersburg State University of Cinema and Television, downloaded from the Internet, partially changing its content.
The prosecutor's office of the Omsk region clarified that in order to receive funding, Kosykh issued an order to open research work on the basis of a fake extract, without discussion and approval of the scientific and technical council. Despite warnings from other employees that no research was actually carried out, the university management approved the payments.
As a result of fraudulent actions, the accused illegally received ₽1,8 million in payment for scientific work and travel expenses. The court ruled to recover this amount from the convicts in favor of the university in solidarity.
The criminal case was initiated on the materials of FSB Russia U. It is worth noting that one of the accused, former rector Anatoly Kosykh, died before the verdict.[1]
