2024: All Employees Data Breach
In early October 2024, it became known that the data of all national police officers Netherlands were stolen by hackers. Dutch police have blamed the data breach on a state-sponsored group.
During the attack, unknown hackers stole a number of confidential data, including names, email addresses, phone numbers and personal information of police officers. Local intelligence services claim "another country or criminals acting on behalf of another country" may have been behind the attack.
In order not to harm the investigation and reveal too much to criminals, at the moment we cannot disclose additional information, the police said, adding that they took strict security measures "in response to the cyber attack. - Police officers work day and night to prevent more cyber threats and track down criminals. |
Dutch Justice Minister David van Wyl said the attack did not threaten to release "personal and investigative data" held by police. He did not specify whether the leak could have affected undercover employees. However, the attack has caused "great concern" among staff who question what kind of data in question. The Dutch police union called the attack "every policeman's nightmare," stressing that law enforcement officials need robust data protection.
While the investigation into the incident continues, police have advised their staff to take extra care over suspicious apps, potentially phishing emails and authentication issues on their devices.[1]
