2024: Recall of 2m vehicles due to steering issues

On October 9, 2024, Honda announced the recall of approximately 2 million cars due to steering problems. The revealed defect increases the risk of road accidents.

The Japanese automaker's recall covers various vehicles in the 2022-2025 model range, including the Civic and Civic Type R, CR-V, HR-V, as well as Acura Integra and Integra Type S. The problem affects 1.7 million cars in the United States, 240 thousand in Canada and 58 thousand in Mexico. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating the matter.

It is said that a defective steering gearbox assembly made with process violations can be used on these cars. This can lead to excessive internal friction and cause steering difficulties, which in certain situations can trigger an accident. There are 13 known incidents related to said problem, including 11 where drivers said they lost control of the vehicle after failing to cope with a brief increase in force on the steering wheel. Honda announced the receipt of 10.3 thousand warranty claims regarding this defect.

Honda notes that a worm gear made with violations can deform under the influence of heat and environmental moisture. In addition, incorrect installation of the spring was detected. All this can provoke noise in the steering mechanism and make it difficult to control, increasing the likelihood of an accident. Owners of defective cars will receive notifications about the need for repairs at an authorized Honda or Acura dealership. All work will be carried out free of charge for motorists.^[1]
