2024: Launching

On October 17, 2024, it became known about the launch of the fourth serial universal nuclear icebreaker of project 22220 - Chukotka. The project was implemented by JSC Baltic Plant.

The hull of the Chukotka icebreaker is made of corrosion-resistant steel and is equipped with ice protection. Pneumatic washing is provided to prevent ice sticking. The stem, which is part of the enlarged block of the nasal tip, weighs 178 tons and will allow breaking through the road in ice up to 3 meters thick.

Project 22220 icebreakers are designed to guide ships in the Arctic, in the Yenisei and Ob Bay sections. They can also tow ships and other floating structures both in ice and on clean water. The capacity of these icebreakers is 60 MW.

The lead nuclear icebreaker Arktika of this project was laid down at the Baltic Plant in November 2013 and commissioned in October 2020. The following icebreakers of the series - Siberia and Ural - became part of the Russian nuclear fleet in December 2021 and November 2022, respectively.

In addition to Chukotka, two more Project 22220 icebreakers are being built at the Baltic Plant - Yakutia and Leningrad. The total cost of building these three vessels exceeds ₽100 billion.

Earlier, FSUE Atomflot and JSC Baltic Plant signed a contract for the construction of two more nuclear icebreakers. Financing will be carried out in equal shares at the expense of the federal budget and Atomflot funds. The commissioning of these vessels is scheduled for December 2028 and December 2030, respectively.[1]
