Complex of routers and Cisco switches.

In the middle of June, 2011 during the International economic forum in St. Petersburg the Cisco company and the Russian Federal Grid Company (JSC FGC UES), signed the memorandum of understanding establishing between them the relations of long-term cooperation for the purpose of reliability augmentation and efficiency of the Russian power distribution networks. The memorandum became the next specific step of Cisco company on rendering assistance in transformation of power infrastructure of Russia.

In 2010 Cisco announced readiness to invest 1 billion dollars in development of an entrepreneurship, environmentally friendly innovations and increase in power efficiency in the Russian Federation. These investments provide joint work with the Russian business in a number of the industries, including in power where it is going to unroll smart grid technology. Why we consider that Russia is ready to transformation of the power on the principles of smart grid? The Russian Federation takes the third place in the world on the volume of the consumed energy resources, but its power infrastructure needs upgrade, and the Russian government headed by the president Medvedev aims to solve this problem. Every year distribution infrastructure of Russia loses 12 percent of the transferred electric power for the amount of 10 billion dollars. It negatively affects the Russian economy and does harm to world ecology. In many respects this problem can be overcome using modern smart grid technologies.

For this purpose it is necessary to upgrade infrastructure due to implementation of smart grid technology in power network. That is why Cisco aims to unroll a full-scale communication matrix on the basis of IPv6 protocol that will allow to integrate information and energy technologies. Cisco provides solutions for full-scale, stable bidirectional coupling between all crucial points of power infrastructure from data processing centers and substations to regional networks and apartment houses. The communication matrix will execute in the solutions smart grid approximately the same role as the operating system.
