2024: Release of China's first 3nm smartphone processor

On October 21, 2024, it became known that Xiaomi developed the first microprocessor in China, which will use 3-nanometer technology. The product is designed for use in mobile devices - smartphones, tablets, etc.

The technical characteristics of the novelty as of the specified date were not disclosed. But it is known that we are talking about a "system on a chip" (SoC). Such solutions combine computing cores, a graphics accelerator, and other components, including wireless adapters, a satellite navigation receiver, a RAM controller, and a cellular modem. According to Tang Jianguo, chief economist at the Beijing City Bureau of Economics and Information Technology, Xiaomi intends to use a 3nm processor in next-generation smartphones.

Xiaomi has released China's first 3nm processor for smartphones

Xiaomi has been developing its own chips for years. The first such product of the Chinese company was the Surge S1 processor, released along with the Mi 5c smartphone in 2017. This 64-bit eight-core chip was manufactured using 28nm technology. This was followed by products of the Surge C, Surge G and Surge R series. For example, in the Xiaomi 14 Ultra smartphone, as noted by the Gizmochina resource, Surge P2 and G1 chips are used, which optimize the battery charging process and extend the battery life.

It is emphasized that in China itself, as of October 2024, there is no equipment for the manufacture of processors using 3nm technology. Which contract manufacturer Xiaomi is going to contact is not specified. The production of products according to methods with 3 nanometer standards is carried out, in particular, by South Korean Samsung and Taiwanese TSMC.[1]
