2024: Transfer to phone scammers over ₽5 million
Former adviser to the President of Bashkiria and ex-deputy of the State Assembly - Kurultay of the Republic Viktor Pchelintsev became a victim of telephone fraudsters, transferring ₽5,2 million to attackers. The incident took place in Ufa. This became known at the end of October 2024.
According to the Telegram channel Sapa_media, the fraudulent scheme began with a call from a person who introduced himself as the rector of the Bashkir Academy of Public Administration Daniyar Abdrakhmanov. The caller informed the retired official about the alleged transfers of funds from his accounts to support the Ukrainian military.
Subsequently, the victim was followed by a series of calls from persons who introduced themselves as employees of the Ministry formations and Science, and Russia. Federal Security Services RUSSIAN FEDERATION Central Bank of Russia Using psychological pressure, the attackers forced the elderly person to visit a bank branch to withdraw cash.
After receiving cash, scammers, through convictions, forced Pchelintsev to perform a series of transactions through an ATM, transferring money to accounts under their control. The victim informed his relatives about the incident.
It was family members who convinced the former adviser to the President of Bashkiria to contact law enforcement agencies with a statement about the crime committed against him. In October 2024, an investigation is underway into the fraud.
A similar scheme of deception using calls on behalf of representatives of government agencies is becoming more widespread. Attackers use modern technology to spoof phone numbers and simulate calls from officials.[1]
