2024: Russia, China and Mongolia agree to create a single tourist route "The Great Tea Way." Card

Representatives of Russia, China and Mongolia have reached an agreement on the creation of a single brand of the international tourist route "The Great Tea Way," which will take place along the historical trade route of the 18th century. The decision was made at the eighth meeting of the heads of tourism departments of the three countries in Ulan-Ude on October 30, 2024.

According to the press service of the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia, more than 30 representatives of business and regions of Russia, China and Mongolia participated in the development of the concept of the route as part of a business dialogue on the sidelines of the meeting.

Deputy Minister of Economic Development of Russia Dmitry Vakhrukov said that during the eighth meeting, the concept of a new tourist route was approved, developed with the participation of tourist associations of the three countries as part of a business dialogue. According to him, more than 30 representatives of business and regional structures of Russia, Mongolia and China took part in this initiative. Vakhrukov stressed that the mechanism for holding such annual meetings has proven its effectiveness in developing tourist interaction between the countries and harmoniously complements the agenda of bilateral relations with foreign partners.

According to the press service, the route will pass from China through Mongolia, Siberia, the Urals and the Volga region to Moscow and St. Petersburg. The project will unite the Russian regions of the Far East, Siberia, the Urals, the Volga region and both capitals. The main emphasis will be placed on the development of excursion and educational tourism for citizens of three countries.

The initiative is of strategic importance for the integration of transport corridors of the Eurasian Economic Union, the Mongolian Steppe Way program and the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative.

The joint action plan for the creation of the route was signed in 2023 at the seventh meeting in the Chinese city of Wuhan. Then, during the meeting, the parties agreed on specific parameters of the project, including uniform standards, geographical framework and meaningful content.

The next, ninth meeting of the heads of tourism departments of Russia, China and Mongolia is scheduled for 2025 in Mongolia.[1]
