The increasing threat is created by smartphones and tablet devices to domination of Microsoft in the market of OS. Now Windows is on the verge of falling lower than 90% of a market share of operating systems.

The data of Net Applications on mobile and desktop operating systems consolidated in one table show reduction of a market share of Microsoft Windows from 93.74% in February, 2009 to 90.29% in December, 2010. In February, 2010 the market share of Windows was above - 92%, but steadily lost during the rest of year.

"The trend of use of operating systems indicates decrease in a share of Windows which during 2011 occasionally will fall lower than 90%", - Vince Vizzaccaro, the executive vice president of Net Applications for marketing and strategic alliances says. Everything depends on influence of several market forces. Recession can be next month, or, perhaps, does not happen at all.

Distribution of smartphones and tablet devices changes determination of the personal computer therefore the efforts of Microsoft made for mobile Windows Phone 7 OS and Windows 7 for tablets will be crucial for Redmond.

Nevertheless, now the majority of personal calculations is still performed by means of Windows. One more market researcher, StatCounter, Net Applications is similar, announces a share desktop and mobile operating systems, without integrating them one statistical table. According to it, the cumulative share of the desktop systems Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 still is at the level of 91.94%, in comparison with Apple Mac X - 6.25% and 0.75%- Linux.

Microsoft can hope for increase in income from Windows because deliveries of the PC, as expected, will grow in 2011-2012, according to IDC. Therefore it is impossible to tell that Windows becomes less – its share more, than all other market movable by mobile devices which grows more and more and does not grow at Microsoft together with it. More and more users use the Internet from the devices which are not working under Windows.

"There are no doubts that the number of users of Windows considerably grew up, at the same time I am confident also in growth of number of users of Mac OS in 2010", - Vizakaro says. "What we observe now - rapid growth in use of mobile and tablet devices. I do not think that Windows Phone 7 long enough is present at the market to help Microsoft on the mobile front, but I consider, Microsoft realizes, it is how important to be present at the mobile arena and is focused on achievements of success".

The market share of Windows decreased from 93.74% in February, 2009 to 90.29% in December, 2010, Mac showed growth from 4.55% to 5.02% during the same period. The share of Linux remained invariable, keeping by about 0.96%, and IOS Apple grew up from 0.23% in February, 2009 up to 1.69% in December, 2010. Only 0.40% of operating systems fall to the share of Android, but it is on rise. Java ME increased the share from 0.23% to 0.91% four times within the last two years.

Positions of Microsoft and in the market of browsers suffer. Microsoft long time dominated in the market of browsers because most of users of Windows browse web pages by means of the Internet Explorer browser integrated into OS. But alternative products, such as Firefox Mozilla and Google Chrome really "ate" a browser market share from Microsoft.

The IT analyst Jack Gold predicts: "By 2013, more than 67% of browsers will have Internet access not with the PC. Internet Explorer, eventually, will become the minor player in the market of browsers. The engine on the basis of WebKit will provide the majority of mobile devices, browsers on the basis of Mozilla (and on the basis of Meego) will be unrolled under Linux, on the equipment of a bigger form factor. The websites, will not be optimized further for Internet Explorer on the basis of the PC, but will be brought to the standard on WebKit and HTML5, for broad compatibility of browsers".
