Recall of 114,000 cars due to defective airbags

On November 7, 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration USA (NHTSA) announced the recall of more than 114 thousand cars. These Volkswagen vehicles use defective airbags that can fire metal parts when triggered.

We are talking about the components of the bankrupt Japanese company Takata. It says the driver's airbag can degrade over time, creating a risk of it exploding. At the same time, fragments flying around the car can cause serious injuries to people. In particular, deaths related to this problem were recorded.

The driver's front airbag supercharger can explode due to degradation of the working substance, which occurs as a result of prolonged exposure to high humidity, high temperatures and cyclic changes in environmental conditions, the NHTSA publication says.

The recall affects the 2006-2019 Beetle and Passat cars. In total, 114,478 vehicles fall under this program. Dealers will replace the driver's airbag modules on recalled cars: all work will be performed free of charge for owners. Motorists will receive a notification about the need to visit the service center. The NHTSA report notes that the recalled vehicles are no longer being produced.

Earlier it became known about the recall of 271,330 Volkswagen Atlas crossovers due to faulty airbags from the passenger. The problem involves weight sensors, which turn off a passenger's airbag even if the seat is occupied. When this happens, a warning indicator lights up on the instrument panel and a beep is heard.[1]
