Cherepovets Steel Mill (Cherepovets Steel Mill, a key asset of Severstal) has implemented an automatic casting rate change system in steelmaking depending on continuous metal temperature measurements in the intermediate ladle. Severstal announced this on November 27, 2024.

Cherepovets Steel Mill has created a large system of digital tools that allow you to conduct and control production processes with minimal human involvement. We introduce digital models, computer vision, calculators on every redistribution. The created system is one example, "commented Evgeny Vinogradov, CEO of Severstal Russian Steel and Resource Assets. - Previously, the operator of the continuous steel casting unit independently selected the casting speed in accordance with the operating map. Now this is done directly by the equipment, relying on the digital assistant. This system allows you to reduce the time for casting one melt by 5-10 minutes and thereby increase the performance of the equipment. In addition, the development makes it possible to increase the stability of the technology and ensure high product quality by excluding the human factor.

The solution was developed by Severstal-Infokom employees together with the Center for Technological Development of Metallurgical Production and the technologists of Cherepovets Steel Mill. As of November 2024, the system of automatic selection of casting speed depending on the readings of continuous measurement of metal temperature in the intermediate bucket was put into commercial operation.
