2024: Installation of Carbon Emissions Monitoring System

MegaFon will help the big data-based climate center of Sakhalin State University track greenhouse gas absorption and emissions in the coastal-marine zone of Aniva Bay in the Sea of Okhotsk. The proposed digital solution will allow the region to use the data obtained to form the carbon balance of Sakhalin. MegaFon announced this on December 11, 2024.

The operator, together with university scientists, is implementing an experimental project at the marine carbon landfill *, which is based on monitoring the soil-water-atmosphere ecosystem, as well as assessing natural carbon emissions.

As part of the cooperation, MegaFon installed a system of 12 automatic observation posts connected to autonomous power supply from solar panels at the training ground. All of them are equipped with instruments for determining the concentration of carbon dioxide and methane, as well as collecting data on weather conditions. In addition, experts mounted two hydrological sensors to track the water level in the reservoirs of the coastal zone.

Environmental monitoring data that university scientists receive online, they use to analyze the amount of permissible emissions and form recommendations for achieving a carbon balance on the island.

The Sakhalin region is confidently moving towards achieving carbon neutrality by introducing the best available technologies on the island. Sakhalin enterprises have been actively working on the modernization of equipment for several years, introducing more environmentally friendly technologies into production. At the same time, modern digital solutions help scientists more accurately assess the current environmental situation in the territory. Our climate experiment is not only scientific, but also educational, the practical results of which we will be able to observe already in 2025, "said Andrei Samatov, Minister of Ecology and Sustainable Development of the Sakhalin Region.

MegaFon participates in environmental monitoring developments in dozens of regions of the country and cooperates with many industrial enterprises. On Sakhalin, we are implementing a greenhouse gas monitoring project together with the regional Ministry of Ecology and Sustainable Development. The solution that we proposed will allow us to form "big data" in the region to study the natural ability to absorb carbon, which will become the basis for the development of the most important climate projects, "said Alexander Kaloshin, Director of MegaFon's National Projects Department.
