2024: Full shutdown due to IT collapse
Edinburgh Airport suspended operations in mid-December 2024 due to IT system failures. The incident, which affected the operation of air traffic control systems throughout the day, led to numerous delays and cancellations.
The disruption began around 4pm on Sunday, December 15, 2024, when the airport reported through its social media channels that due to problems with IT equipment, it could neither accept nor send any aircraft: Engineers are working to resolve the problem. Passengers should check the status of their flight with the airline before travelling to the airport. |
Passengers were expected to be left disappointed by the operation of the airport, as communication with Europe was completely suspended. Many were late for connecting flights, others had to wait while sitting on a plane on the runway.
At 6.54pm, an airport spokesman said: The IT issue affecting air traffic control has now been resolved and flights have resumed. However, we encourage passengers to still check the status of their flight with the airline before travelling to the airport. In addition, we would like to thank the passengers for their patience and understanding. |
The exact nature of the IT system failure is still under investigation. The incident led to all flights being grounded for about four hours. Several inbound flights have been diverted to alternative airports including Glasgow, Manchester and Newcastle. About 18 flights to European destinations were completely canceled due to prolonged downtime. Social media was flooded with messages from affected passengers sharing their experiences and seeking updates on the delays.[1]
