2024: Import substitution of the collection system

VTB has imported a foreign system for collecting, storing and visualizing metadata. It helps users find the right information faster, analyze the impact of various changes and improve the quality of the data with which the bank works. The bank announced this on January 21, 2024.

Metadata is data about data. Prior to that, the bank used a foreign catalog. It had more than 22 million storage records: schemas, tables and more, and more than 3 million other metadata. Specialists had to study a large amount of documentation and even analyze the program code in order to understand the system. All data is now presented in a single Open Metadata (OMD) interface. This greatly speeds up operations and allows the bank to quickly bring new products and services to the market for customers.

A large-scale project was implemented to implement an automated metadata management and accounting system based on OpenMetadata. This system helps to effectively manage and analyze the impact of changes. It also allows you to work with a large amount of information and simplifies the interaction between bank users. All the necessary data from the old system were transferred to the new one, - said Nikita Rybchenko, head of the department for technological development of general bank systems, senior vice president of VTB.

The catalog based on Open Metadata was selected according to more than two dozen criteria. The solution has several advantages: it is based on its own architecture with a kernel for collecting and storing metadata, it is easily transferred to a new platform and integrates with a dictionary of business terms.

The metadata catalog can be compared to a navigator. This is a tool that helps you understand how data is organized on the platform. It shows the location of each table and view, as well as the path of the data: from the download procedure to the transformation. You can detail the information to the level of fields or enlarge it to schemes, - said Svetlana Bova, Managing Director of the IT Architecture Department, Vice President of VTB.

The tool is especially useful for system analysts, designers, developers, and data quality professionals. It allows them to quickly find and work with the right data.
