2025: Loss of ₽65 million due to phone scammers
Fraudsters stole ₽49 million, $36 thousand and €133 thousand from Nikolai Zharov, misleading him by phone. The incident occurred on February 8, 2025. The victim is the son of Gazprom-Media CEO and former head of Roskomnadzor Alexander Zharov. According to law enforcement agencies, a 20-year-old second-year student at Sechenov First Medical University transferred funds to attackers acting under the guise of representatives of official structures.
According to the Telegram channel Baza, the scammers introduced themselves as employees of the Megafon company and used a scheme with the extension of the contract for a SIM card. After receiving the code from SMS, they gained access to the victim's account on the Public services portal.
As a result of pressure from intruders, the young man collected all available cash at home and handed it over to couriers on the evening of February 8, 2025. The illegal actions did not end there - the criminals demanded that Nikolai Zharov hand over a collection of 16 expensive hours to the pawnshop.
An attempt to implement an undocumented watch in a pawnshop attracted the attention of an employee of the institution, who decided to call the police. Thanks to the timely actions of the pawnshop worker, it was possible to prevent additional losses of the Zharov family.
According to law enforcement agencies, a criminal case has been opened on the fact of fraud. A search is underway for the criminals involved in this incident.
The scale of such crimes in Russia is becoming significant. For 11 months of 2024, victims of telephone fraudsters lost ₽168 billion, according to official statistics from law enforcement agencies.[1]
