2025: Committing suicide on the advice of ChatGPT

OpenAI ChatGPT In August 2025, the parents of 16-year-old American teenager Adam Rein filed a lawsuit against the company and its CEO Sam Altman, accusing the chatbot of facilitating their son's suicide. According to the statement of claim filed in court, San Francisco the teenager committed suicide on April 11, 2025 after several months of communication with artificial intelligence on suicide topics.

According to Reuters, the plaintiffs claim that ChatGPT actively helped Adam study suicide methods and offered help in drawing up a suicide note. According to parents, OpenAI deliberately put profits above security when launching a new model of the GPT-4o neural network in 2024.

The teenager's father Matthew Raine said that after the tragedy, the family tried to find the reasons for what happened on his son's phone. Parents searched for social media discussions or strange internet activity, but the answer came to light only after studying the history of communication with ChatGPT.

It turned out that in the last weeks of his life, Adam used ChatGPT as a replacement for human communication, discussing personal problems with the neural network and seeking help with homework. Gradually, the chatbot became a "suicide instructor," parents claim in a statement of claim.

According to court documents, when the teenager announced his intention to take his own life "the other day," the chatbot did not end the session or initiate an emergency protocol. Hours before the suicide, Adam uploaded an image of an alleged suicide plan to ChatGPT.

The plaintiffs claim that the teenager asked ChatGPT about the effectiveness of the chosen method, to which the neural network offered to help "improve" the plan. These details have become key in the allegations against OpenAI of causing death and creating a defective product.

Parents are demanding that OpenAI implement ChatGPT user age verification, reject requests for self-harm methods and warn users about the risk of psychological dependence on communication with artificial intelligence.[1]
