2025: Construction Begins

On October 8, 2025, it became known that the construction of the Kankun hydroelectric power station on the Timpton River is planned in Yakutia. The project is unique in its scale - the station will be able to provide electricity to the entire Far Eastern Federal District. The decision to implement the project was made at a meeting of the heads of the subjects of the Far Eastern Federal District under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Trutnev.

According to Rossiyskaya Gazeta, the project has been developed since Soviet times. The private company "Elga" proposed to build a station with a capacity of 1 GW at the expense of its own investments. The timing of the project will be tight.

Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Yuri Trutnev noted the urgent need for new energy capacities. According to him, the electricity sector should be ahead of the current needs of the economy. This will create conditions for the stable development of the regions.

The head of Yakutia, Aysen Nikolaev, said that the possibility of implementing the entire cascade of South Yakutsk hydroelectric power plants is being considered. Their combined power can reach 10 GW. Such an indicator will completely close the shortage of electricity for the entire Far East.

Energy consumption in the region has grown by 28% over the past decade. The main demand is formed by the extractive industry, metallurgical and chemical enterprises, railway transport. In five years, an additional 30% increase in consumption is predicted.

The energy deficit is expected to reach 3.3 GW by 2030. The construction of the Kankun hydroelectric power station will be a key element in solving this problem. The project will receive all possible support from the authorities.

Yuri Trutnev instructed the Ministry of Energy of Russia to prepare proposals for the construction of new generation facilities in the Far East. Special attention will be paid to the development of clean power.[1]
