2024: Production of protein confectionery products in the world for the year increased by 5% and reached 545 thousand tons
The global production of protein confectionery products amounted to 545 thousand tons in 2024. The indicator is 5% more than the level of the previous year. For the period from 2020 to 2024, output increased by 19% from 459 thousand tons. The growth was supported by consistently strong consumer demand for alternatives to traditional sweets. This is evidenced by data from the BusinesStat study, published in October 2025.
Production in 2021 reached 481 thousand tons of protein products. An increase of 4.8% was recorded compared to the level of 2020. In 2022, output amounted to 498 thousand tons with an increase of 3.6% per year. The indicator of 2023 reached 519 thousand tons with an increase of 4.3% compared to the previous period. Dynamics demonstrates a steady upward trend for five years. Growth rates ranged from 3.6% to 5% annually during the reporting period.
A more significant increase in production was hindered by the crisis of supply chains in 2021-2022. The decline in consumer solvency in a number of countries occurred against the background of accelerating inflation. Logistics problems affected the supply of whey and plant proteins for production. Specialized sugar substitutes have become difficult to access for some manufacturers. Packaging materials have risen in price due to disruption of supply chains. Manufacturers of protein confectionery were forced to look for new suppliers of raw materials. Reformulation has become a necessity for some companies. Production was stopped at individual enterprises.
In 2023-2024, against the background of high inflation, a decrease in effective demand was observed. Countries in Europe and America have experienced pressure on consumer budgets. Most consumers opted for basic foods. More traditional and cheaper snacks supplanted protein products[1].
