Biography

2025: Continuation of pension payments after years of deliberate mutilation of patients

In mid-October 2025, it became known that the notorious surgeon Sam Eljamel not only escaped from Scotland, where he crippled hundreds of patients during unsuccessful operations, but also continues to receive pension payments from the British National Health Service (NHS).

Professor Eljamel headed the neurosurgery department at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee (the county seat of Dundee City). According to the Daily Mail, he was suspended from work in December 2013, and about a year later retired. In Dundee, he earned about 100 thousand pounds a year ($134.36 thousand at the exchange rate as of October 17, 2025), while his pension payments are about half of this amount. In addition, the disgraced surgeon receives a pension for years of work in the National Health Service of England.

After the scandal in Scotland, Eljamel returned to his native Libya, where he continues to operate on patients. It is estimated that his total pension payments for 11 years (from 2014 to 2025) could be about £1m. Thus, the surgeon's savings from working in Scotland continued to grow even after his flight to North Africa and numerous complaints from affected patients. Pat Kelly, a former Radio Tay presenter who suffered at the hands of Eljamel in 2007 during an operation allegedly aimed at fixing spinal problems, told The Sunday Post:

It is a complete disgrace that our own government pays him a fortune every month. I can't work since Eljamel disfigured me.

Affected patients claim they are still unable to get justice as their claims are continually dismissed. According to the authorities, the statute of limitations for possible crimes of the surgeon has already expired.
