2025: Sudden Death
At the end of October 2025, the outstanding Chinese researcher in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) Liu Haolin passed away. He was 37 years old.
According to Financial Express, Liu Haolin has dedicated his activities to advanced real-time data processing technologies. The central theme of his research was reducing the dependence of AI algorithms on cloud computing and optimizing the distribution of computing power.
The Financial Express says the Chinese scientist led seven projects, some funded by China's National Natural Science Foundation. Haolin's scientific achievements were celebrated as promising, which allowed him to be nominated for a scholarship for young talents and participate in a program to support promising teachers in Hunan province.
Meanwhile, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) draws attention to the increasing incidence of sudden deaths of Chinese specialists working in the field of AI.
In June 2022, according to SCMP, Sun Jian, a leading scientist from Megvii Technologies, an expert in computer vision, died. In 2023, Feng Yanhe, an assistant professor at Beijing's National University of Defense Technology, who was developing artificial intelligence systems for the military, passed away. In the same 2023, the founder of SenseTime and professor at the Chinese University in Hong Kong, Tang Xiaou, died.
According to journalists from the SCMP, these tragic cases raise serious questions and concerns about the safety of specialists engaged in research in the field of artificial intelligence, as well as the level of nervous tension they face. This problem is becoming especially significant in the context of intense technological competition in the field of AI between China and the United States of America.[1]
