Biography

1959-2011

Zhao was born on January 27, 1959 in Beijing (China). In 1982 he graduated from the Russian National Research Medical University. N.I. Pirogov with a degree in Medical Medicine. From 1982 to 1983 he underwent an internship with a degree in Surgery at City Clinical Hospital No. 15. In 1999 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic "Tumors of the liver and proximal bile ducts. Diagnosis and treatment. " In the same year he founded a liver transplantation program on the basis of the Research Institute of Joint Venture named after N.V. Sklifosovsky.

In 2004, Zhao completed an internship at the Department of Oncology of the SEI HPE MMA named after I.M. Sechenov, after which he was assigned the specialty of an oncologist. Since 2005, he has been a professor at the Department of Hospital Surgery at Moscow Classical University, and since 2008, a professor at the Department of Transplantology and Artificial Organs of Moscow State Medical University. Zhao is one of the world's leading specialists in the field of abdominal and, in particular, hepatopancreatobiliary surgery, the creator of new directions in surgical hepatology and pancreatology.

From 1983 to 1991, Zhao worked as a surgeon at City Clinical Hospital No. 15, and in 1992 he took the post of assistant at the Department of Hospital Surgery No. 1 at the 2nd Moscow Medical University. In May 1994, he moved to work at the Institute of Surgery. A.V. Vishnevsky as a senior researcher in the Department of Abdominal Surgery. In 1999-2011, he headed the Moscow City Liver Transplantation Center on the basis of the Research Institute of the N.V. Sklifosovsky. Since 2011, Zhao served as Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Institute of Surgery named after A.V. Vishnevsky " Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.

2025: Appointment by the head physician of the K + 31 clinic network

In mid-November 2025, it became known that Alexey Zhao was appointed to the post of chief physician of the K + 31 network of private multidisciplinary clinics (part of the MedInvestGroup Group).
