2024: Reduction in gastric volume reduction operations by 17% to 8216

According to data published by the Russian Society of Bariatric Surgeons, in 2024 - compared to 2023 - the number of bariatric operations (for gastric resection) in Russia decreased by 17%: from 9861 to 8216. Zdrav.Expert got acquainted with such statistics in November 2025.

According to the same organization, in 2020-2024, more than 36 thousand such operations were performed, that is, 2.6 times more often compared to the previous five-year period. The main reason is the increase in the incidence of obesity.

The number of operations to reduce the volume of the stomach for the year decreased by 17% to 8216

According to Kommersant, citing the head of the Ministry of Health, Mikhail Murashko, the prevalence of obesity among men in Russia reached 20.6%, and among women - 27.4% (in 1993, these indicators were 8.3% and 23.2%, respectively). Every fourth Russian has a diagnosis of obesity.

Maxim Burikov, head of the Center for Bariatric Medicine at the FMBA in Rostov-on-Don, co-owner of the Slimmer application, confirms the increasing demand for this type of treatment, noting that fewer such operations are performed in Russia compared to global practice.

According to the International Federation of Obesity Surgery (IFSO), 230.7 thousand patients were operated on in the United States in 2023, while 7.7 thousand in Russia.

The cost of a bariatric operation in Russia is from 200 to 400 thousand rubles. Due to the lack of quotas and specialists, only patients with severe forms of obesity can count on free medical care for compulsory medical insurance.

Endocrinologist of the clinic of preventive medicine and longevity EMS Nikolai Matsievsky claims: many patients see surgery as a quick way to lose weight, bypassing the mandatory stage of diet and lifestyle changes.

According to SberHealth endocrinologist Daria Pronina, 8% of patients face postoperative complications, and 15-20% have depression or weight return within five years.

Daria Ovchinnikova, gastroenterologist of the Ilya Trukhanov Clinic in Kurkino, emphasizes: in 95% of cases, systematic overweight is the cause of overweight.[1]
