2024: WHO: 1.5 million people die from lead poisoning in the world every year. It is found in paints, water pipes and soil

The World Health Organization reported the death of approximately 1.5 million people annually from lead poisoning. The main cause of death is cardiovascular disease caused by exposure to toxic metal. Such data were released in October 2025.

WHO called on states to take urgent measures to prevent lead poisoning of the population. The organization expects "decisive measures" from governments to protect the health of citizens. The press release highlights the need for comprehensive bans on the production, import, sale and use of lead paints.

According to the WHO, about 1.5 million people die every year from poisoning with lead, which is present in paints, water pipes and soil

WHO representatives stressed that there is no safe level of lead exposure. The organization demands immediate action to address its impact and protect future generations. In young children, lead poisoning leads to reduced levels of intelligence, learning difficulties and behavior problems.

The main sources of lead in the environment include various objects of everyday use. Metal is present in paints, especially in older buildings built before the 1970s. Lead water pipes remain a common source of drinking water pollution in many regions of the world.

The soil is contaminated with lead as a result of industrial activities, car exhaust and the destruction of lead paints. The metal is also found in batteries, cosmetics, toys and utensils. Pollution spreads through air, water and soil.

WHO identified key sources of lead pollution:

  • extraction and smelting of lead ores;
  • industrial production;
  • recycling of secondary raw materials;
  • use in the composition of various products.

The largest amount of lead consumption in the world is in the production of batteries for cars. This sector accounts for more than 80% of the total use of metal in industry.[1]
