2025: Product Announcement

In December 2025, the Chinese carmaker Geely demonstrated the Geely EX5 electric crossover with independent steering of all four wheels. Each wheel can rotate up to 90 degrees, which allows the car to turn almost in place and move in any direction, including lateral movement.

The main feature of the technology is the use of compact electric motors built directly into the wheels. Each wheel is controlled separately, which ensures the complete independence of their rotation and traction. The solution was developed by the automaker itself and is used on an experimental EX5 sample.

Compact electric motors are integrated into wheel hubs. This allows you to abandon the traditional transmission with cardan shafts and differentials. Each wheel receives an individual command for rotation and traction from the central control unit.

Independent control of all four wheels opens up opportunities for complex maneuvers. The car can rotate around its own axis without a significant turning radius. Diagonal motion and sharp angle rotation are also available.

The new car control unit deserves special attention. Previously, Geely engineers tested the controls with a special glove. In the future, they plan to replace it with a smartphone or smartwatch.

In the future, the driver will be able to remotely move the car, accurately positioning it when parking or leaving cramped spaces. Remote control will simplify maneuvering in a limited space without the presence of a driver in the cabin. This is especially true for narrow parking spaces.

Thanks to the 90-degree turn of the wheels, the prototype is able to park in extremely limited conditions. The car uses a "crab stroke" mode when the car is moving sideways. This allows you to enter the parking space perpendicular to the direction of the entrance.

The Geely EX5 is an all-electric crossover built on the GEA modular architecture. Its dimensions are 4615×1901×1670 mm with a wheelbase of 2750 mm. The modular platform allows you to adapt the design for various types of bodies and power plants.[1]
