Biography

1978-2022

Logunov was born on October 13, 1978 in the city of Frunze (Kyrgyz SSR). In 2000 he graduated from the Faculty of Biotechnology of Kursk State Medical University (Department of Biomedical Engineering). In 2002 he defended his thesis at the All-Russian Research Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology on the topic "Construction of recombinant adenoviruses of birds CELO for the expression of genetic information in the body of mammals and birds."

At the NICEM named after Gamalei Logunov has been working since 2003: he has gone from a researcher to deputy director for scientific work. In 2011, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic "Modulation of the activity of transcriptional regulators p53 and NF-kB in mycoplasma infection as a factor contributing to the transformation of eukaryotic cells and tumor progression." In 2016, he became a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in 2022 - an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is a professor at the Department of Biological and Chemical Technology of KSMU. He was awarded the medal of the Order of Merit to the Fatherland, II degree, and the Order of Pirogov.

Under the leadership of Logunov, drugs "GamEvak" and "GamEvak-Kombi" against Ebola were created. In 2020, Logunov headed a scientific group that, during the COVID-19 pandemic, created the world's first Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine. His range of activities includes the development of recombinant viral vaccines and gene therapeutics.

2025: Appointment as the head of the Gamaleya Research Institute for Electrochemistry

On December 22, 2025 National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology named after N.F. Gamaleya (FSBI "N.F. Gamaleya National Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology") Ministry of Health , Academician RAS Denis Logunov was appointed to the post of Director of the Russian Federation. In this position, he replaced, Alexandra Ginzburg who will continue to work as the scientific director of the institution.[1]
