2026: Wanted list by Taiwan authorities

On January 13, 2026, the prosecutor's office of the Taiwanese region of Shilin put on the wanted list the founder and CEO of the Chinese technology giant Shenzhen OnePlus Pete Lau (Liu Zohu). His company, which produces smartphones under the OnePlus brand, is suspected of illegally hiring software developers. This was reported by the Central News Agency of Taiwan (CNA).

According to investigators, at the end of 2014, Pete Lau arrived in Taiwan and agreed to create a development team ON for. smartphones A network of companies has been used to circumvent legislation governing relations between Taiwan and mainland China.

Hong Kong OnePlus Company was incorporated in Hong Kong in March 2014 and its Taiwan branch Hong Kong OnePlus Technology Co., Ltd in March 2015. Taiwan Branch. Later in May 2019, the companies were renamed Hong Kong Sonar Consulting Co., Ltd. and Hong Kong Sonar Company Taiwan Branch respectively.

From August 2015 to January 2021, the parent company Shenzhen OnePlus transferred over $72.93 million to the Taiwanese branch through structures including Hong Kong Dasheng International Trading Company.

These funds were transferred under the guise of income from commissioned research work and the sale of their results. The money was used for operations in Taiwan: hiring more than 70 engineers, paying them salaries and purchasing equipment.

Witnesses testified that the developed software was used exclusively in Oppo and OnePlus smartphones. The head of the Taiwan office was required to regularly report on employee attendance and financial situation to headquarters in Shenzhen.

Prosecutors have charged two workers in the Taiwan branch. The defendants in the case were Zheng Nu (a nominal responsible person involved in tax planning) and Lin Nan (head of research and development (R&D). They are accused of violating the "Law on Relations between the Peoples of [Taiwan and Mainland China]."[1]
