The Higher School of Economics started a wireless network in the territory of university

The Asteros company built a wireless local computer network at the State university Higher School of Economics.

Objectives

For providing high educational standards and saturated current work, GU HSE needs to be provided to students, graduate students and teachers reliable access to all information resources of university: to library, internal portal, system of the lesson schedule. The decision on creation of the wireless local computer network covering all educational audiences, laboratories and departments in 8 educational buildings of GU HSE in Moscow was made and at the same time to support work of a large number of users.

Solution

In the fall of 2010 specialists of Asteros started creation of IT infrastructure. Within the project it was important not only to provide a reliable covering with network of all territory of university taking into account a difficult design of academic buildings, but also to guarantee radio compatibility of a local network of the university with infrastructure of adjoining buildings. Specialists of Asteros carried out careful radio inspection of academic buildings. On the basis of its results the network was designed, and then installation and setup of the equipment is made.

The local computer network of GU HSE is created on Cisco Wireless Mesh technology and includes:

• 190 Wi-Fi of access points (each point supports net surfing of 100 users);
• wireless controllers;
• switches of a reference data network.

Details

Capacity of a wireless network makes 100 MB/sec. Seamless roaming allows to use all resources of university, freely moving on educational buildings.

According to Asteros, it is the Russia's first wireless network for university from 100% a territory covering. The network was created with an essential stock – now at different faculties GU HSE in Moscow about 12 thousand students and graduate students study, and the wireless network of university is capable to support work to 19 thousand users. At the same time experts of Asteros helped to think over the structure of network, to minimize number of the used equipment and to save reasonable project cost.

Result

About 12 thousand students, graduate students and teachers of GU HSE have an opportunity to work with all information resources, being in any point of university. Start of Wi-fi of network will allow GU HSE to support high standards of training.

Opinion

"On the scale and engineering complexity the project of creation of network in GU HSE is comparable to equipment of Wi - Fi - technologies of airport terminal. The main complexity was that some educational body of the university in Moscow adjoins to the organizations imposing increased requirements to security (FSB, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, foreign embassies). Therefore at design and installation of equipment engineers of Asteros considered radio compatibility of networks that they did not clash and did not interfere with work of each other", – Yury Mazurov, the area director on work with organizations of formation of Asteros company considers.
