2019: Instagram filters give a powerful boost to the cosmetics market - the head of L'Oréal

In mid-September 2019, L'Oreal CEO Jean-Paul Agon said that Instagram gave a powerful boost to the cosmetics market - after all, young women have to devote much more effort and time to make-up to look as good as on selfies with Instagram filters.

Comments by the head of L'Oreal, which owns brands such as Maybelline, Garnier and Lancôme, caused a sharp negative reaction. A member of the British Parliament called "terrible and irresponsible" and suggested that such words would further affect vulnerable youth.

Literally, the statement of Jean-Paul Agon, published by MarketWatch, sounded like this: The more effort you make to look great on the Internet, the more you have to work on yourself when you go outside so that your acquaintances do not find out how different you are from the image created on the network. Agon also added that people using filters on Instagram have to use more and more cosmetics.

Agon believes that, despite the fall in sales of cosmetics in the United States, the business of self-care products is "almost immune to the crisis." Investors and analysts acknowledge that L'Oréal will be able to continue to grow, develop and increase profits, no matter what happens in the world.

Agon also surprised the press with a contradictory statement on the issue of pollution:

We do not encourage pollution, but this process undoubtedly provides an impetus for the development of our business.

Agon explained that in the city, skin is exposed to more intense harmful factors, which means that the townspeople need more shampoos, conditioners, skin care products and other cosmetic products. In addition, expanding the circle of communication of citizens also contributes to the sale of cosmetic products.[1]
