2020: Hanging of opposition journalist Ruhollu Zam in Iran
In December 2020, opposition journalist Ruhollah Zam, convicted of cooperation with foreign intelligence, was executed in Iran.
The deputy was hanged on the morning of December 12. Four days earlier, the Supreme Court had refused to commute his sentence and review the case.
Zam was one of Iran's most famous opposition activists and the creator of the Amad News telegram channel, which published incriminating material on senior officials of the country. The channel also actively covered the protests in Iran that took place in 2017.
A court in Iran found Zam guilty of anti-government activities and cooperation with intelligence agencies of the United States, France and Israel. According to the Iranian authorities, in his posts, the journalist deliberately instigated readers to participate in the riots.
Zam lived for several years in France, where he received political asylum. In 2019, he was abducted by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and taken to Iran. Allegedly, the abduction took place in Iraq, where Zama was lured by an offer to interview an exclusive local activist[1].
