2018: Windows 10 became more popular than Windows 7

At the beginning of 2018 Windows 10 for the first time outstripped Windows 7 in popularity in the market of personal computers.

According to StatCounter service, publishing statistics on the basis of 3 billion websites and 15 billion web browsings, in January, 2018 Windows 10 was used in 42.8% of desktops and notebooks based on operating systems of Microsoft on a global scale. A month earlier the indicator was 41.7%.

The share of Windows 7 was during this time reduced from 41.89% to 41.86%. In an asset of Windows 8.1 the third place and a 8.7 percent market share. The list of the most demanded computer Windows platforms also included Windows XP (3.36%) and Windows 8 (2.44%).

By the end of 2017 Windows 10 was installed on 600 million devices against 500 million in April. Initially Microsoft calculated that the boundary of 1 billion tens installations will obey in two-three years since launch in 2015. Afterwards the company refused these plans.

As notes the VentureBeat edition, the number of computers with Windows 10 grows in a program basis almost linearly that significantly better Windows 8 loudspeakers and even Windows 7  in due time.

According to StatCounter estimates for January, 2018, Windows remains the operating system family, most popular in the world, for the PC. Its share makes nearly 83% whereas the closest persecutors have macOS and Linux — indicators are equal 12.8% and 1.4%.

In Russia situation following: Windows is installed almost on every ninth computer from ten (88.9%), and among versions of Windows "seven" with result more than in 50% is in the lead, and Windows 7 share in 2017 decreased very slowly. By the beginning of the 2018th of Windows 10 it is installed on a third of the Russian computers, and top three is closed by Window 8.1 (8.8%). At Windows XP — 5% of a segment.^[1]

2016: The share of Windows 10 grows slowly

On June 9, 2016 it became known of growth of a share of Windows 10 OS in the world - it grew in two months approximately by 2%. According to the The Channel edition with reference to service Netmarketshare, for May, 2016 the indicator of a market share of this OS reached 17.43% that in absolute value ~ 300 million devices^[2].

The prevalence of Windows XP falls more slowly. In March, 2016 this OS use 10.9% of devices, in May — 10.09%.

The indicator of prevalence of Windows 7 in March - 51.89%, in April decreased to 47.82%. By May the value grew and reached 48.57%. Analysts draw a conclusion: Windows 7 is three times one June more popular than 2016, than Windows 10.

The share of Windows 10 grows not really dynamically, despite pressure put upon users: refuse installation of this system very difficult.

At the beginning of June in the world scandal ran high: on the computer of fighters against the poachers working in Africa 6 Gbytes of updates to Windows 10 were loaded. It costed to volunteers $30 thousand, they worked on the satellite Internet with payment for traffic. On the website Change.org there was a petition requiring to prohibit Microsoft to update violently OS of users.

Microsoft reported: after July 29, 2016 updating to Windows 10 will take place only for money ($119)^[3].

2015

120 million devices on Windows 10

According to Microsoft, by the beginning of November, 2015 Windows 10 is installed more than on 120 million devices worldwide. The share of this product in the market of desktop operating systems makes nearly 8%, statistics of NetMarketShare service for October, 2015 demonstrates.^[4]

75 million devices on Windows 10

According to data of Microsoft, by the end of September, 2015 in the world there are over 75 million computer devices on the Windows platform 10. By 2018 growth of this indicator up to 1 billion is expected.
