2024: Mass layoffs due to digitalization

CNN announced about 100 job cuts. It was announced in July 2024.

According to AP News, one of the reasons for the layoffs is digitalization. The television company intends to pay more attention to the direction of electronic media. CNN said it plans to release its first digital subscriptions before the end of the year as the news network looks to rebuild its business. The station's plans were outlined in a letter sent to employees Wednesday by CNN CEO Mark Thompson.

CNN announces about 100 job cuts

Thompson said 100 jobs were being abolished with a total headcount of about 3,500. Open vacancies were closed wherever possible to minimize the total number of layoffs. Media organizations, including CNN, are trying to increase audiences and revenues and are looking to diversify what they offer customers.

Thompson stated that CNN's digital strategy must be 'ambitious enough to provide the audience and income we need to maintain our unique journalistic power and success as a business'. According to the company's plans, CNN will create new digital products that offer news, analytics and context in new formats in a subscription format. Their efforts will aim to keep users on CNN's website longer.

Previously, CNN's digital products were primarily based on text articles, while the company now plans to move to more video content. The organisation is also set to develop more 'useful news', including lifestyle content.

CNN will also focus more on artificial intelligence and consider how the technology can be safely used to serve audiences, Thompson said.[1]

2022: Lawsuit from ex-US President Trump

On October 3, 2022, it became known that Donald Trump sued CNN and demanded $475 million in compensation. Trump's statement of claim said that the channel had slanderous labels on him, such as "racist," "Russian footman," "rebel" and "Hitler."
