2026: Reduction of 8 thousand jobs
German railway operator Deutsche Bahn AG is cutting 8,000 jobs in DB Cargo's subsidiary in the freight sector. Foreign media write about this in February 2026. DB Cargo wants to completely abandon the single-car transportation business, which is practically profitable. Consultants are working on options to reduce DB Cargo by 80% or even close it completely. Such cuts would have logistical implications for much of the country's economy.[1]
2022: Stopping free delivery of goods to Ukraine during the conflict
Germany's main railway operator Deutsche Bahn, after the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine, delivered humanitarian cargo to the war zone for free, but from January 1, 2023, the company stopped deliveries.
In December, DB Cargo notified the authorities that free transportation would soon be temporarily suspended. The company explained that they can bear the corresponding costs only until a certain point, the reserve of funds for these purposes was running out.
According to Der Spiegel sources, the company repeatedly appealed to the German Ministry of Transport with a request to finance transportation, but was refused.
