Akhtynsky district is located in the south of Dagestan and borders: with Rutulsky, Kurakhsky, Magaramkentsky and Dokuzparinsky districts of the republic. In the southwest the area borders on Azerbaijan throughout 62 km. The area of the territory — 1120 km ².
Ridges of the area: Main Caucasian, Shalbuzdagsky, Samur, Gelmets-Akhtynsky. In the territory of the area there are mountain Mount Shalbuzdag (4142), Malkamud (3880), Yarusadag (3584), Shavliz-kuk (3100), Yalak (3004), Ukhindag (1870). The main rivers — Samur, Akhtychay, Muglakhchay, Fiya, MAZ, Kizildere.
