2022: Name change to Global DC Oy

In May 2022, Yandex announced a change in the name of its subsidiary in Finland. The new name is Global DC Oy.

According to Forbes, citing the press service of Yandex, the rebranding of the Finnish subsidiary is due to the fact that the company's data center located in this country is mainly used for international services that do not use the Yandex brand.

Yandex renamed the Finnish "daughter"

According to the Minister of Transport and Communications of Finland Timo Harakka, Yandex is under special supervision - close attention of the authorities is directed at the company.

Jussi Halla-Aho, chairman of the parliament's foreign affairs committee, considers Yandex's work in Finland problematic, since the company can disseminate "propaganda information," but notes that it cannot be immediately blocked even if it is found inappropriate.

First of all, it is necessary to check whether the spread of propaganda violates any existing law, the politician said.

Halla-Aho suggested that the company's activities could also fall under restrictions. At the same time, Finland advocates "comprehensive" sanctions, and not against individual companies.

Finnish energy companies are less and less willing to supply Yandex with electricity, the Finnish TV channel Yle reported on May 6, 2022, without specifying the source of information. He said that the data center has been supplied from diesel generators for almost two weeks and the company has not yet been able to conclude a new contract for energy supply.

The head of operation of Yandex data centers, Alexei Zhumykin, confirmed that Yandex tried to negotiate with Ilmatar Energia and offered a more attractive price, but failed. When the company contacted other suppliers, it received only a lot of evasive answers, Yle quoted Zhumykin as saying.[1]
