2025: Cyberattack disables IT systems: Hackers demand $10 million
In March 2025, hackers attacked an international airport. As Kuala Lumpur a result of the cyber incident, the operation IT of the -infrastructure of the air hub, including equipment control and control systems, was completely paralyzed. The incident was officially reported on March 26, 2025 by the National Agency cyber security Malaysia and the management of the country's airport operator.
The attack resulted in significant outages to the systems, including display boards, passenger check-ins and baggage handling, which did not function for more than 10 hours. The National Cybersecurity Agency (NACSA) received notification of the incident on the day the attack began and has been in constant contact with the parties involved ever since, conducting a comprehensive investigation into the nature and scale of the incident.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed the attack during a public speech on March 26, 2025. He said that hackers targeted Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), the company that manages the country's airports, and demanded a ransom of $10 million. The head of government categorically refused to negotiate with extortionists, stressing: "Such actions are a betrayal and a threat to national security. The state will not make concessions - neither external nor internal threats. "
Despite the fact that official sources do not specify whether the ransomware was used, and none of the well-known hacker groups have yet claimed responsibility for the incident, the fact of the ransom requirement indicates the possible use of data encryption software. At the moment, the authorities have not disclosed additional technical details of the incident.[1]
