2025: Opening of the port for ₽87 billion

The volume of investments in the construction of the new port "Lavna" under Murmansk amounted to more than ₽87 billion, said at the Ministry of Transport Russia end of March 2025. The facility was officially commissioned and began commercial activity by loading the first batch of coal for export. The port has become one of the largest infrastructure projects in the North-West of the country and is aimed at strengthening the export potential of the Russian coal industry, as well as developing the transport accessibility of the Murmansk transport hub.

According to Interfax, the Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Roman Starovoit during the launch ceremony stressed that the financing of the project is completely returnable commercial. According to him, with the opening of Lavna, the Murmansk transport hub will become one of the leading logistics hubs in Russia and will make a significant contribution to the development and provision of cargo traffic on the Great Northern Sea Route.

The planned volume of transshipment of the port "Lavna" will be 18 million tons per year, and in the future this figure is planned to be increased to 24 million tons annually. As of February 2025, the regional authorities estimated the construction readiness of the facility at 90%, and the preliminary volume of investments was ₽78,5 billion. The port "Lavna" is located on the western shore of the Kola Bay of the Barents Sea and has a number of strategic advantages. It is ice-free and deep-sea, allowing it to receive large-tonnage vessels year-round. However, it should be noted that the port operator - Lavna Commercial Seaport LLC - is included in the US sanctions list.[1]
