2018: Disclosure of source codes

At the beginning of October, 2018 Microsoft published MS-DOS operating system source codes. They were laid out under license MIT X1 in GitHub service which earlier American corporation purchased for $7.5 billion.

Source codes of two versions of MS-DOS (1.25 and 2.0) written on the assembler for processors Intel 8086 are published. And the same files are submitted that were published by the Museum of computer history in 2014. Microsoft decided to use the platform GitHub that it was simpler and more convenient to the interested people to look for the materials connected with the old platform for computers.

The version of MS-DOS 1.25 released in May, 1983 includes only seven files. MS-DOS 2.0 contains already 100 files though it was released only several months after release 1.25. Microsoft also pays attention that source code 86-DOS, progenitresses of MS-DOS, is dated on December 29, 1980

Microsoft laid out source codes of MS-DOS

Microsoft notes that the company welcomes use of the source code MS-DOS by third-party developers for creation of own versions of the operating system. At the same time acquaintance with the enclosed documentation (files of the .TXT and .DOC format), containing comments of developers is recommended.

License MIT X11 permits to use the software practically without restrictions, it is required to include in each copy of the licensed software of a product of data on authorship created on the basis of and the specified conditions only. At this Microsoft does not permit to make requests for inclusion of the code in source codes or their modification.[1]
