2024: US returns to Subic Bay, which had its military base for 90 years
In March 2025, it became known that the Americans were returning to the Philippine bay of Subic, which they left three decades ago - there they plan to rent a warehouse on the territory of the former base. During the Cold War, one of the main US military facilities in the region was located there.
Subic Bay served the Americans for more than 90 years as a projection site for its military force in Southeast Asia and beyond. The deep harbour and its strategic location near points of potential tension contributed to this.
The base in Subic Bay has symbolic significance for the Filipinos themselves. In 1992, the Americans nevertheless withdrew their troops from there, transferring the territory to local authorities. And although the country had been independent by then for several decades, the event was seen as a complete exit from the status of a US colony.
American servicemen have visited the base quite often lately, and US ships passed into the bay for repair and maintenance. But renting a warehouse for equipment can become the basis for the partial return of Americans to Subic.
The Philippine authorities themselves also talk about the modernization of the old infrastructure of the base, as well as the construction of new facilities next to it, since Subic itself at that time is a civilian port. A full-fledged return of the base, planned for 2028, will be an important step in the confrontation with the PRC.
2023: Philippines pinpoints location of four new U.S. military bases
On April 3, 2023, the Philippines identified the location of four new military bases to be accessed USA as part of an expanded defense agreement that analysts say aims to combat. China
The four bases include three on the main island of Luzon, near Taiwan, and one in Palawan Province in the South China Sea.
The new locations, opened as part of the 2014 Expanded Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), will allow the U.S. to rotate troops at nine bases in the Philippines, including the strategically important Balabac Island, located near Chinese facilities in the South China Sea.
